When it comes to any kind of information this phenomenon is always present. The best way to avoid this is what I always try to practice, write it down!!!!
Well I would say that’s it, but that is not true. Names can be the most frustrating things. For example a relative might have in one census his name as JC Wyatt, the next census might have his name as Jacob Wyatt. Then when another census came it could have been documented as C Wyatt. Any number of reasons could be thought of as to why the variation, from personal reasons (such as a thick accent) to who the census taker was. At one point some families who could not support their children would send them to live with relatives, close or distant in relations and/or distance. This would make tracing any family member even more difficult. Also just like any daughter today, back then some would find themselves in a “condition” and they would also be sent away to live with other family. This would then require detective work to look through the family that was alive at the time who could have taken them in.
In the end for whatever reason, when it comes to family there is always a hint of complexity somewhere.
